WE CARE
Please love and care for all creatures great and small.
I rescued Penny on July 4, 2001 when she was 6 years old. I found her in a
garage with her nine pups approximately 2 weeks old. Emaciated and
starved I brought her home, and began the process of caring for her and
bottle feeding her pups. After a veterinarian appointment, I learned that
she had heartworm disease and that it had spread to her pups. Weaning
them 5 weeks later, Penny and her pups were treated for the disease and
they all survived.
The local newspaper The Telegram and Gazette, featured a story about Penny
and we received over 100 calls from people wanting a pup and Penny too. I
fell in love with Penny as I witnessed her constant caring for her pups,
even in her weakened state. I could not let her go and decided to keep
her. After fielding calls, and interviewing prospective "puppy parents" I
selected new homes for eight of the pups. I kept the ninth pup and we
named her Spot.
It has been 4 years and 5 months as of this writing, and Penny still cares for Spot, grooms her face and ears daily, and teaches her many lessons in becoming a dog. Spot grew to 125 pounds, Penny 75 pounds. Penny and Spot were spayed. They live with the Queen of 'Sheba' who is my top dog at 12 years old. Sheba is a 50 pound yellow lab and avid swimmer who enjoys bossing every dog around. Life is good for dogs at our house with daily off leash hikes in and around the woods and pond, with plenty of dog and people food, and a few cats to chase around when the instinct is awakened.
Penny succumbed to cancer on Decmber 18, 2006.
You were my best teacher and friend. You taught me how to live with grace and without resentment after all you had been through. A miracle happened the day that I met you.
Rest in Peace my girl.
